Voor het prikkelbaredarmsyndroom (PDS) bestaat geen universeel effectief medicijn.

Stimuleren van zelfmanagement door herstructurering van disfunctionele cognities en gedrag op basis van (minimale) cognitieve gedragstherapie (CGT) is bewezen effectief.

CGT werkt wellicht nog beter door situationele feedback via pocketcomputers, dat wil zeggen op momenten waarop disfunctionele cognities en gedragingen zich voordoen.

Op korte termijn verbeterden PDS-gerelateerde disfunctionele cognities, kwaliteit van leven en pijnklachten met situationele feedback via pocketcomputers meer dan met alleen standaard huisartsenzorg.

Er is aandacht nodig voor de implementatie van dergelijke effectieve e-health-interventies in de eerste lijn.
