Bij kinderen met buikpijn vinden huisartsen vaak geen onderliggende oorzaak.

Functionele buikpijn heeft een grote impact op het welzijn en functioneren van het kind. Het schoolverzuim is hoog.

Er is onvoldoende bewijs voor een causale relatie tussen psychische problemen van het kind en functionele buikpijn. Wel komen beide vaak naast elkaar voor: 15 tot 44% van de kinderen met functionele buikpijn heeft ook angstklachten of een depressie.

Van de kinderen met functionele klachten heeft 60,5% verschillende andere functionele klachten. Deze zijn bij 44% van de kinderen na 1 jaar nog steeds aanwezig.

Psychische problemen van de ouders voorspellen het ontstaan van functionele buikpijn bij hun kind.

Vanwege zijn kennis van het gezin is de huisarts de aangewezen persoon om kinderen met functionele buikpijn te begeleiden.
